Grunting and growling, he rolled to a stop on the street below, a strange weapon skittering across the grav-plates.

It took little time for Max to reach his opponent. “Who sent you?” he roared.

The man raised his head. Bloody gashes and matted, golden hair confronted him. “It’s too late,” he said, spitting crimson saliva, “we’ve already got the woman. If you ever want to see her again, stand down.”

Alex, tell me you’ve reached Kassia.

“Negative,” xe replied. “But based on her last known position, I have narrowed her location to a single block of buildings.”

Stand by.

“Wait,” pleaded the AI. “Several more individuals are moving in your direction.”

How many?

“Five—two of whom will arrive in approximately three minutes.”

Max kicked one of the man’s splayed feet. “Stand up.”

“Go fuck yourself.”

Grabbing the man’s collar, Max jerked him to his feet. “You didn’t answer me. Who. Sent. You?”

“And you didn’t hear me: go fuck yourself.”

“Okay, tough guy. Have it your way.” Max forced the man toward the discarded weapon. “Your friends are almost here, but they won’t be able to help you.” The man clawed Max’s arms but lacked the strength to alter his fate. The instant he realized he was outmatched, his face went blank. “See what I mean?” growled Max. “I could snap you in two without breaking a sweat, and there’s not one damn thing you could do about it.”

Releasing him, Max stepped back and threw a right cross, then a left. The man doubled over, crumpling onto the street in a heap.

“Subject has multiple micro-fractures in his mandible,” stated Link, “and has lost consciousness.”

One more hit and his jaw would’ve shattered. Two more, and he’d never wake up. Max knew as much. Bone and tissue damage were easily calculated using his combat app.
